As a child growing up in the Midwest, I would often daydream about what life was like in those far-off places. It wasn't until I was a teenager that I really began to understand the power of the west through the work of Ansel Adams. His use of light in his western landscapes was unlike anything I had ever seen before, and it sparked something inside me. Since then, I have been lucky enough to Chase The Light out west on multiple occasions, and I have never been disappointed. In this gallery, I share with you some of my favorite images that I have captured during my travels west. But the Tetons remain exactly as he saw them — that jagged silhouette rising abruptly from the valley floor, the dramatic relief of Grand Teton asserting itself against the sky, no foothills to soften the impact. I chose to work in black and white because this landscape doesn't need color. I shot it straight on, keeping the composition simple so the form would do all the work. The sandstone behind the opening glows orange in the ambient canyon light, and the heart reads clearly against it. Water made this over an unimaginable span of time. Slot canyons are carved not for our viewing but by flash floods that have cut through sandstone for millennia. We are simply visitors to spaces shaped by forces far more patient and powerful than ourselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI descended into Antelope Canyon midday, when the sun reaches the angle necessary to send light deep into these narrow passages. The canyon floor is soft sand, the walls rising in smooth, flowing curves on either side. Every surface has been shaped by water polished, carved, sculpted into forms that seem almost intentional in their grace.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I was waiting for was this: a single beam of light breaking through the narrow opening far above, cutting through the darkness like a presence you can almost touch. When it appeared, the effect was immediate and dramatic. The beam illuminated a column of air filled with dust particles, creating a visible shaft of light that anchored itself to the canyon floor. These lights are known as ghost trails. The surrounding walls glowed in shades of amber, orange, and rust, their undulating surfaces catching and reflecting light in subtle gradations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis isn't constant. The beam moves. It shifts. It disappears when clouds pass overhead. The landscape speaks for itself—massive sandstone buttes rising from the desert floor, their silhouettes recognized worldwide as the visual shorthand for the American West. But recognition doesn't diminish impact. Standing there as the sun rises, you feel the scale and the silence in a way no photograph or film can quite convey.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI positioned myself here hours before sunrise, setting up in darkness while the buttes stood as darker shapes against a dark sky. As the horizon began to lighten, I watched the transformation unfold in stages. First, the sky took on color - pale yellow near the horizon, deepening to gold, then to the rich tones of amber and rose. Then the clouds caught fire, illuminated from below by the rising sun.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe moment I was waiting for came when the sun emerged just beside the West Mitten Butte, creating that perfect starburst of light while the formations themselves remained in relative shadow, their edges catching the warm glow.
