It was early in the pandemic, that strange period when the city lights stayed on but the crowds disappeared, and the Cuyahoga was carrying the reflection of the party without the party. I set up looking back toward Lake Erie down the river, and what I found was a scene that felt both familiar and completely foreign.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThere's something about a waterfront at night when no one's there. The neon reflections stretch across the still water, the buildings hold their light for an audience of none, and the river goes about its business regardless. C Flat in jazz is a note that doesn't officially exist — it's just B, wearing different clothes. This photograph is a little like that. Two Cleveland icons, both of them in the middle of their own transitions.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eStadium photography at night is about patience and timing. The lights of the ballpark have to balance with the ambient light of the surrounding city, and that balance only exists for a narrow window after dark. I was after the combination of baseball and Terminal Town — the way Cleveland has always identified itself through its sports and its skyline, bound together. The water catches the illumination from below and the ambient light of the surrounding city and turns itself into something kinetic and alive.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWKRP in Cincinnati made this fountain famous to a generation of television viewers, and I think about that when I work here — the way a piece of civic art becomes shorthand for an entire city's identity. I wasn't thinking about Johnny Fever when I made this image, but I understand the reference. This image catches it with more atmosphere — the stone details sharp, the tower rising cleanly above them, the whole composition pulling the eye upward in the way the architect intended. Cleveland built something permanent here. There's a permanence to the Roebling Bridge that feels right for a photograph. The wheel has been welcoming visitors into the park since 1935, which means it's been painting light across this harbour for nearly a century. The river doesn't care about the game, but it holds the lights all the same. On this evening the Ohio was running smooth enough to reflect the ballpark clearly, and the sky was doing exactly what I needed it to do.
