It's the first major sandstone monolith you encounter when you arrive from the south, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. I'd been chasing its light for two days when the right sunset finally arrived — the low western light catching the full face of the formation at an angle that brought out every layer of red and orange in the Navajo sandstone.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eZion's geology reads like a color chart of geological time — each band of sandstone deposited under different conditions, each one a slightly different shade of red or ochre or cream. The Watchman holds all of those layers on its face, and at the right hour of a clear evening, the light sets them all at once. I was set up and ready well before sunset. Behind them, the ridgeline was catching the first alpenglow of the day, the rock warming from gray to gold as the sun climbed.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe composition here is about layers. The wildflowers in the foreground are dense and painterly — you can spend time moving through them in the frame, finding new colors, new blooms. The spruce trees in the middle ground provide a break before the open talus slopes and the lit ridgeline above. The curve of the water pulls you into the frame and leads the eye toward the mountain at the same moment the mountain pulls the eye upward. Moran isn't the tallest peak in the Tetons, but it's often the most photogenic — that distinctive dark dike of rock cutting through the snow and granite makes it instantly recognizable. The spot is called Artist Point because Thomas Moran painted it in 1871. I understand completely why he kept coming back.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI framed the shot to use the pine trees on either side of the overlook as natural borders, letting them bracket the canyon below and draw the eye to the falls in the center distance. The depth of the canyon is hard to convey in a photograph — the river at the bottom is enormous, but from here it reads as a thin blue thread. The falls disappear into mist before they hit the canyon floor. There are very few places on earth where the photography feels both effortless and impossible at the same time. The weathered timber structure, with its broken rails and rusted hardware, became a window looking directly at some of the most dramatic peaks on the continent.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI positioned myself so the opening in the corral framing aligned with the central Teton peaks — Grand Teton and its neighbors rising snow-white above the valley floor, the dramatic clouds above them echoing the vertical energy of the mountains. The foreground is all decay and age; the background is permanence. That contrast is the whole point. The cowboys who built this corral were here for a generation. But the Tetons remain exactly as he saw them — that jagged silhouette rising abruptly from the valley floor, the dramatic relief of Grand Teton asserting itself against the sky, no foothills to soften the impact. I chose to work in black and white because this landscape doesn't need color. It has all the tonal range you could ask for — pure white snow in the couloirs, deep black in the shadowed rock, and every shade between in the layered forest below.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI composed vertically to emphasize the compression of the scene — the density of the evergreens in the foreground, the middle ground of valley floor catching residual light, then that wall of mountain demanding the top of the frame. Mount Shuksan is the second kind. I hiked in to Picture Lake in the North Cascades of Washington state late in the afternoon, and when I came around the final bend and saw the peak — and then saw it again doubled in the glass-still water — I understood why this has been called one of the most photographed mountains in the world.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe conditions were close to perfect. A few high cumulus clouds hung in a deep blue sky, the last light was raking across the upper ridges, and the water had gone entirely flat in that alpine stillness that comes just before the day lets go. I worked the composition carefully, using the rocky outcrops on either side to frame the reflection and keep the eye centered on the peak. The small patches of snow still clinging to Shuksan's face in mid-summer added the brightness the composition needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe title came to me as I was processing the image. I'd turned back for one last look before starting the hike out, and that's the view I captured — the deliberate pause, the decision to stop and truly see before moving on. There's a lesson in that for anyone who spends time in the mountains, or anywhere that rewards attention.
