The American bison nearly disappeared entirely from this continent in the space of a few decades and has recovered, partially, in places like this one. Sitting in the sagebrush at Yellowstone, it looks as though it never left.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAmerican Original is the image in the bison series that I return to for its stillness. It is not dramatic. It is not a moment of action or decision or tension. It is simply an old animal in its landscape, resting in the way it has always rested, in a place it was born to occupy.
