Chasing Giants: An Alaskan Grizzly Bear Photography Expedition
Few places on Earth stir the soul quite like Alaska.
Its vast wilderness - where mountains dissolve into mist, rivers cut through endless tundra, and wildlife roams untouched - has long called to explorers and photographers alike. This past season, I answered that call on a four-day expedition deep into grizzly country, guided by Wild Alaska Travel and expedition leader Laurent Dick.
It was an unforgettable journey into one of nature’s most powerful theaters.
Into the Wild Frontier
Our small group traveled across four remote locations, each offering a different window into the lives of Alaska’s brown bears. From tidal flats to salmon-rich rivers and open alpine meadows, every landscape felt alive with anticipation.
We rose before sunrise, scanning fog-draped shorelines for movement. By mid-day, bears would emerge - mothers guiding curious cubs, dominant males staking claims to fishing holes, young bears wrestling in playful rehearsals for adulthood.
Each moment demanded patience, respect, and readiness.
This is the essence of wildlife photography: waiting quietly for the wilderness to reveal itself… and then responding in an instant when the light and life align.
The Salmon Run: Nature’s Grand Stage
Summer in Alaska means salmon - and salmon means bears.
Rivers erupted with action as grizzlies charged through rushing water, jaws snapping shut around flashing silver fish. Mothers coached cubs along gravel banks. Massive males squared off in silent tests of dominance. Spray flew. Light shimmered. Muscles rippled beneath thick coats.
For photographers, the conditions are unmatched: dramatic subjects, raw interaction, and constantly changing light reflecting off water, clouds, and mountain backdrops.
It was here that my signature approach - Chasing the Light - came alive in its purest form. Golden evenings illuminated steam rising from cold rivers. Soft overcast skies created painterly tones across fur and landscape. Every frame was a negotiation between timing, weather, and wildness.

Final Thoughts
Standing ankle-deep in glacial water while a thousand-pound bear lunges for salmon fifty yards away is humbling. It reminds you - quickly - how small we are in the grand scheme of wild places.
Alaska doesn’t perform for cameras.
It simply exists - massive, unforgiving, luminous.
And if you’re patient enough… it lets you witness magic.
