The 10th on the South Course is the kind of hole that rewards patience with light. I set up behind the fairway as the sun was setting, watching a bank of high cirrus catch fire in pinks and lavenders overhead. The pines held their silhouettes on the left, the green waited in the middle of the frame, and two white sand bunkers sat in perfect formation, guarding the approach.

What makes this composition work is restraint. No overpowering foreground, no tricks — just the clean sweep of a closely mown fairway leading the eye to the green, the bunkers providing contrast, and the sky doing the dramatic work above. Landscape beds of pine straw and ornamental grass on the left add a touch of intentional color that balances the composition without pulling focus from the main subject.

The Low Country gives photographers these skies routinely, but the right one on the right hole is still a matter of timing and patience. I worked the light for the few minutes it held, waiting for the moment when the pinks in the clouds were at their richest against the deepening blue overhead.

10 South Berkeley Hall captures the graceful close of a day on the South Course — a simple fairway, two perfect bunkers, and a sky that reminds you why you play in the Low Country at all.
