The 11th hole on the North Course has a lone pine that has become a kind of unofficial portrait subject for anyone who's walked this property with a camera. It stands alone at the edge of the green complex, thick-trunked and straight, backed on the right morning by a sky that looks painted. I arrived in the dark and waited for that narrow window when the pre-dawn color peaks.
The pinks and purples came in layers — deep at the horizon, lighter up into the dome — and the sand bunkers on the green complex picked up just enough warm tone to read as golden rather than white. I composed low and wide to give the sky the room it needed, letting the pine tree anchor the left side of the frame and the gentle curve of the fairway pull the eye forward.
This is Tom Fazio design at its most photogenic. The bunker shapes feel hand-drawn, the green sits at the perfect distance from the tree, and the whole hole is laid out on a gentle rise that gives you a natural grandstand to shoot from. All I had to do was be there when the sky caught fire.
