I arrived at the course well before the first tee time, when the morning mist was still rising off the water and the light was just beginning to soften from that cool pre-dawn blue. The pond was completely still—that perfect mirror surface that only happens in the early morning calm before wind picks up or activity disturbs the water.

What stopped me was the completeness of the reflection. The tree line, the fairway, the carefully sculpted bunkers—everything doubled in the still water, creating symmetry that felt almost too perfect to be real. The sky overhead was holding that golden-amber glow that comes just after sunrise when the light has warmth but hasn't yet turned harsh. The greens were saturated and vivid, that particular shade of emerald that only shows in morning light after overnight irrigation.

I composed to emphasize the reflection, giving it equal weight with the actual landscape. The native grasses and palmettos in the immediate foreground provided texture and depth, framing the view naturally without overwhelming it. The layers worked perfectly—foreground vegetation, mirror-calm water, reflected landscape, actual landscape, tree line, and that glowing morning sky.

What I wanted to capture was the privilege of being on a golf course before anyone else arrives—when maintenance crews have finished their work and the course sits pristine and empty, when the light is at its most flattering, when reflections are possible because nothing has disturbed the water's surface. This is what these landscapes look like in their best moment, before play begins and the day fully arrives.
