I almost didn't include this vantage in my shot list. Tucked behind a cluster of young oaks on the bank of the pond, it's the kind of view you have to climb through underbrush to reach. But once I'd set the camera down and framed through the framing trees, I knew it was going to be a keeper. The pond in the middle ground, the green and bunker tucked into the trees beyond, and a slice of soft pre-dawn sky — all perfectly composed by nature.
The framing trees give the image a sense of discovery, as if the viewer is glimpsing the hole from inside a natural blind. The long, still pond reflects the scene back up, its tannin-dark water softening the colors. Spanish moss hangs from a branch in the upper frame, adding the texture that's essentially the signature of Low Country photography.
I worked quickly — the light was changing by the minute — and chose a wider aperture to keep the framing trees slightly soft, letting the eye travel through them rather than stop on them.
