A few holes on any course earn the description 'signature,' and at Berkeley Hall the 12th South is one of them. I've photographed this green dozens of times, but this sunrise was the one that stopped me — the sky lit up in improbable swirls of orange, pink, and red, the pond on the left going mirror-still and doubling everything above it.
I composed horizontally to use every inch of that sky, with the green and its flag positioned in the lower right and the mirrored pond on the left holding the reflected color. The pines on the far side were silhouettes — the sky behind them was too bright to render them in any other way — and that silhouette treatment turned out to be exactly right. It kept the eye on the sky and the water and stopped any detail from competing with the drama.
Mornings like this one remind me why I drag the camera out in the dark. You can't plan them; you can only be present for them.
