I'd walked out to this hole specifically to photograph it in early morning light, when the greens would be at their most saturated and the sky might still be holding interesting clouds. The morning had delivered—the fairway and green were vibrant in that fresh-cut, post-irrigation intensity, and overhead, scattered clouds were catching light and creating texture against the blue.

The composition presented itself naturally. The fairway led from foreground to the green in the middle distance, the sculpted bunker providing that classic golf course contrast of bright white sand against emerald turf. The flag stood visible on the green, and the tree line beyond—a mix of pines and hardwoods characteristic of Lowcountry courses—framed the hole and provided depth.

What made this scene work was the quality of the light. Early enough that shadows were still long and soft, late enough that color had developed fully. The clouds overhead added visual interest without creating harsh contrast or threatening weather. The native grasses bordering the fairway were backlit slightly, giving them dimension and separating them from the darker background.

I set up to show the hole as players would see it—the strategic challenge visible, the beauty apparent, the design intent clear. The bunker positioned to catch errant approach shots, the green elevated slightly and contoured, the trees defining boundaries and creating both risk and reward. This is Lowcountry golf architecture at its most refined—native landscapes preserved and incorporated, design that works with topography rather than against it, and maintenance standards that create playing surfaces worthy of the setting.

What I wanted to preserve was the moment before play—when the course sits ready and perfect, when the work of dozens of people who arrived before dawn has created conditions that will last only until the first group tees off, when the light shows everything at its best and the day's potential still feels unlimited.
