This is the kind of image that announces itself from fifty yards away. Standing on the tee at the 13th South with the last light of the day working through the pines, I watched the sky break into violet and gold and knew the shot had already composed itself. All I had to do was set up, level the tripod, and press the shutter at the right moment.
The composition is a corridor. Tall, straight loblolly pines flank both sides of the frame, their trunks forming natural columns, and the fairway opens between them toward a distant green guarded by a necklace of white sand. Overhead, the sky runs from deep purple at the top to brilliant gold at the horizon, held in place by the dark mass of pines.
Corridor compositions can feel claustrophobic if the light is wrong, but this evening the sky did all the work — brightening the far end of the frame, pulling the viewer's eye straight down the line of play, and giving the hole its sense of promise.
13 South Berkeley Hall turns the tee shot into a kind of cathedral — pines for columns, sunset for stained glass, and a fairway opening toward the promise of the round ahead.
