18th Hole Heritage Club - 1

The finishing hole at Heritage Club has a stone wall, a flag, and — on the right evening — a sky that can stop a round dead in its tracks. I'd been waiting for a sunset like this one for weeks, the kind that paints the entire dome overhead in watercolor pinks and golds and blues, every cloud catching a slightly different shade. When the color kicked off, the pond in front of the green did exactly what I'd been hoping — it went flat and mirrored the whole sky back up.

The stone wall, built to hold the green complex against the water, became the hard anchor in the middle of an otherwise soft image. Above it, the bare branches of early spring trees held their silhouettes against the color; the houses beyond the course softened into the background. The single flag on the green was the one reminder that this was still, after all, a golf course — a place for a game, even on an evening that had turned into something more like a cathedral service.

I worked low and close to the water, using a wide aperture and a steady tripod to let the reflection fill the lower half of the frame. The symmetry that results — sky above, sky below, stone wall and tree line holding the seam — is the kind of composition a photographer waits years for and only occasionally gets to keep.

18th Hole Heritage Club captures the closing hole at its most theatrical — when an ordinary evening becomes a cathedral of color, and a still pond doubles the sky so the round never quite has to end.
