The water feature between the 9th and 18th holes at Berkeley Hall's North Course is one of those elements that makes a golf course more than a golf course. On the right evening, with the sky doing its work and the water holding still, this stretch of the course becomes one of the most photogenic scenes in the South Carolina Low Country. I was there when the reflection locked in — the sky above mirrored in the water below with a clarity that made it difficult to tell which half of the image was which.
What I was after in this composition was the symmetry of the reflection without it feeling mechanical. The sand bunkers on either side of the twin greens anchor the frame in the real world, while the sky and its mirror image do everything else. The colors that evening moved through every tone from gold to deep magenta to the softer blues at the top of the frame, and the still water held all of them perfectly. Berkeley Hall earns this kind of light. The course is built for photographs like this one.
