Snow on a Low Country golf course is rare enough to feel like a gift when it happens. This 9th North image was made on one of those rare mornings — the pond edged in white, the course buried under a soft blanket of snow, and a dawn sky catching pinks and oranges overhead. I'd been waiting years for a chance at this exact combination.
The pond went mirror-still, reflecting the pink sky and the bare deciduous trees with almost no distortion. The snow-covered fairway and bunker area caught pale pink from the sky, making the whole foreground feel cool and warm at the same time. A single bare tree stood vertical on the right bank, its stark silhouette echoing in the water below.
These are photographs you can't plan for. The weather has to cooperate, the light has to be right, and you have to be there with the camera ready. When all three happen at once, the image almost makes itself.
