The egret came in low over the spartina grass - so low that the tips of the marsh at its highest growth nearly brushed its feet - wings in the downstroke, body angled forward over the golden-green of the Lowcountry marsh in late afternoon. I had been waiting at the edge of the wetland for the light to do what it was about to do, the way you learn to wait in the Lowcountry when the afternoon begins to turn and the spartina takes on that particular gold. The egret arrived in it at exactly the right moment, white against the warm green below.
This is the Lowcountry as I experience it most often - not the dramatic storm light or the peak of sunrise, but the steady, generous late-afternoon quality that settles into the marsh grass and turns everything warm. The egret crossing in that light, low and purposeful, is a sight so common in this landscape that it could be overlooked. I have tried to photograph it each time I see it, because the commonness of the sight doesn't diminish its beauty.
Above the Marsh is a quiet image - not the most dramatic in the collection, but perhaps the most true to the daily life of this particular landscape. The Lowcountry marsh is full of egrets moving through the light this way, all day, every day, in a routine that has not changed in any essential way for thousands of years. This is one of them, on one afternoon, in the particular quality of light that the marsh provides when the day is beginning to settle. On metal, the warmth of that light is fully present and entirely at home in any space.
