All Along The Watchman

The Watchman stands at the south entrance of Zion National Park with a quiet authority that the more celebrated formations inside the canyon sometimes lack. It's the first major sandstone monolith you encounter when you arrive from the south, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. I'd been chasing its light for two days when the right sunset finally arrived — the low western light catching the full face of the formation at an angle that brought out every layer of red and orange in the Navajo sandstone.
Zion's geology reads like a color chart of geological time — each band of sandstone deposited under different conditions, each one a slightly different shade of red or ochre or cream. The Watchman holds all of those layers on its face, and at the right hour of a clear evening, the light sets them all at once. I was set up and ready well before sunset. The Watchman rewarded the patience.
