Sankaty Lighthouse on Nantucket doesn't get the attention of some of New England's more famous lighthouses, but on a clear, moonless night with no light pollution and the beam in full rotation, it becomes one of the most extraordinary night photography subjects I've worked with. I lay on the ground at the base of the tower, pointed my camera straight up, opened the shutter, and let the night do what it was going to do.
What Nantucket has that most places don't is genuine darkness. No ambient glow from a nearby city, no haze in the atmosphere — just stars and the lighthouse beam carving its arc through the frame. The beam moved through the exposure exactly as I hoped, intersecting the Milky Way at a point that feels deliberate but wasn't planned at all. Sometimes the best photographs are the ones the night makes for you.
