Blue Portrait

The tricolored heron was still in the late afternoon light - perched on a branch over a Lowcountry lily pond, the water dappled behind it, its body turned in three-quarter profile in a way that showed the full gradient of its plumage from the deeper blue of the wings to the lilac-gray of the breast. The Lowcountry ponds have a quality of light in the late afternoon that is unlike anywhere else I have photographed - something about the reflection off the water and the canopy filtering above produces a softness that is perfectly suited to this kind of portrait. The bird was not displaying, not calling, not moving. It was simply present in its extraordinary color, entirely composed.

There is a quality to a bird resting in good light that a bird in motion rarely gives you - a completeness, a stillness that allows the eye to take inventory. With a tricolored heron, that inventory is a long one. The layering of blue-gray and lavender and rust and white, the fine detail of the breast feathers, the slender elegance of the neck and bill: these things reveal themselves slowly when the bird is still, in the way that a painting gives itself up over time.

Blue Portrait is the quieter companion to the drama of Breeding Colors - the same species, a different register. Not the peak of display but the moment before or after it, when the bird is at rest in its own particular beauty and the light is handling the rest.
