The Cleveland Flats were empty the night I made this photograph, and that emptiness was the whole point. It was early in the pandemic, that strange period when the city lights stayed on but the crowds disappeared, and the Cuyahoga was carrying the reflection of the party without the party. I set up looking back toward Lake Erie down the river, and what I found was a scene that felt both familiar and completely foreign.
There's something about a waterfront at night when no one's there. The neon reflections stretch across the still water, the buildings hold their light for an audience of none, and the river goes about its business regardless. C Flat in jazz is a note that doesn't officially exist — it's just B, wearing different clothes. This photograph is a little like that. The Flats at their most honest, dressed up with nowhere to go.
