I'd been watching the sky build for most of the afternoon, waiting for the moment when the cloud cover would break in a way that produced something other than flat light. When it happened, it happened all at once — a gap opened in the overcast, and a shaft of direct sunlight poured through it and hit the landscape below with an intensity that felt almost physical. I had the camera ready and made the most of the sixty seconds before the clouds closed again.
Dramatic light through clouds is one of those phenomena that photographs naturally want to be dramatic about, and I usually resist that impulse. But there are moments — this was one of them — where the light itself is the subject, not the landscape below it. The clouds frame the shaft, the shaft defines everything it touches, and the overall effect is something between weather and theater. Cloud Burst is the right title for a moment that arrived without warning and left the same way.
