The young bear had been on the far side of the stump when it heard something - or perhaps simply decided, the way young bears do, to find out what was on the other side. We had been moving through the grizzly mazes on foot that afternoon - the dense brushy corridors along the river where the bears move and concentrate and the walking requires constant attention. The bear came around slowly, using the weathered wood as cover the way it might use a rock or a tree, and arrived at the edge of it with its chin nearly resting on the bark, looking at the world with an expression of pure, uncomplicated curiosity.
Young bears are endlessly curious animals. They investigate everything - smell it, paw at it, consider it from different angles before deciding what it is. This one had decided to investigate whatever was at the water's edge by the simplest possible method: walking up to it and looking. The eye was bright and direct, the posture unhurried. There was no fear in it, which is both the delight and the responsibility of encounters like this one.
Curious by Nature is the image from this collection that I find myself returning to most often - not for its drama, but for its lack of it. It is a young animal doing what young animals do: encountering the world and leaning in toward it instead of away. On metal at large scale, the detail in that eye and that expression carries completely, and the image brings a gentle vitality to any room that receives it.
