Dawn of a New Day

I arrived at Sankaty Head well before the light began its transition, knowing I wanted to experiment with perspective. Most people photograph this lighthouse from a distance, showing the full structure and the landscape around it. I wanted something different - something that emphasized form and color over context.

I positioned myself close to the base and looked up, framing the lighthouse against the emerging sky. The distinctive red band that wraps around the white tower created a strong graphic element, and the sky behind was transitioning through that perfect gradient of blue - deep cobalt overhead fading to softer tones near the horizon where the last light was lingering.

What made this composition work was the simplicity. No foreground, no context, just the clean geometry of the tower rising into the frame and the smooth color transition of the sky behind it. The slight vignetting at the edges added to the abstract quality, making this less about documenting a lighthouse and more about form, color, and perspective.

The timing was critical - too late and the sky would still be too bright, too learly and I'd lose the color gradient. I waited for that brief window when the first light blue dominates but warmth still lingers at the edges, creating that particular quality of light that exists for maybe fifteen minutes and then disappears into the day.
