Most people won't get out of bed at 4 in the morning to chase a sunrise on a cloudy, stormy day. The logic is understandable — clouds mean no light, no light means no photograph. But weather photography operates on a different set of rules, and some of the most interesting light I've ever seen arrived exactly when the clouds decided to cooperate for just a few minutes at the wrong time of day for the right reasons.
This is one of those mornings. The storm front that had been moving through overnight left a gap at the horizon just wide enough for the rising sun to fire through before the clouds closed again. What you can't plan for, you have to be awake for. Forrest Gump had the box of chocolates analogy right — you genuinely never know what you're going to get. This morning gave me fire on the horizon.
