I had been watching this bear from the bank for the better part of an hour - one of the days we spent walking the rivers on foot, working our way through the dense brush and the grizzly mazes to find positions along the water. When the bear finally decided to commit fully - not the testing lunge or the half-measure approach, but the full forward throw of the entire body into the water at speed - what came next was a wall of spray and a moment of pure kinetic energy that I caught on the shutter and that still surprises me when I look at it.
The force of a large bear entering shallow water at speed is difficult to describe without an image like this one. The water doesn't give way so much as it yields suddenly and completely, erupting in every direction as several hundred pounds of animal commits to a direction with everything it has. The bear's face is in the water. The water is in the air. The salmon - somewhere in all of that - is having a very bad moment.
