The Tyler Davidson Fountain — better known around Cincinnati as the Genius of Water — has been the centerpiece of Fountain Square since 1871. I've photographed it in every season and in every light, but there's something about what the fountain does on a warm evening when the jets are running that no other conditions replicate. The water catches the illumination from below and the ambient light of the surrounding city and turns itself into something kinetic and alive.
WKRP in Cincinnati made this fountain famous to a generation of television viewers, and I think about that when I work here — the way a piece of civic art becomes shorthand for an entire city's identity. I wasn't thinking about Johnny Fever when I made this image, but I understand the reference. The light show being put on here on any given evening is, as he would say, far out.
