Gentle Dunes

I reached the dunes before sunrise, settling into the grass while the world was still deciding what the morning would be. The sea oats around me were motionless in the pre-dawn calm, their silhouettes barely visible against a sky that was just beginning to warm at the eastern edge. I waited, as I always do, for the moment when waiting becomes unnecessary—when the light declares itself and the frame simply appears.

When the sun crested the horizon, it came gold and full, and the sea oats caught it immediately—every stem luminous, every seed head backlit and glowing against the orange of the sky beyond. The clouds above caught the same warmth from below, reflecting it back in bands of orange and rose and gold. The ocean was a thin line of silver between the grass and the horizon, present but peaceful.

This is the Lowcountry coast at its most essential—the grass, the light, the sky, the sea, all in their proper order, all cooperating in a way that only the earliest hours allow. Gentle Dunes is an image about the gift of arrival—about being at the right place at the right moment and having the patience to let that moment fully open. On metal at large scale, the warmth of that sunrise light carries forward into any room, arriving every time you look at it the way it arrived that morning: quietly, and all at once.
