The Terminal Tower has been Cleveland's defining landmark since it opened in 1930, and it rewards patient photography. I'd been looking for a composition that captured the tower differently — not the standard skyline shot, not the aerial — when I found this angle at the building's base, looking up through the architectural alcove that frames the tower's lower floors before the shaft rises above it.
Architecture photography is largely about finding the vantage point that the building was designed to be seen from, and then being there at the right light. The Terminal Tower has a formal grandeur that midday light flattens. This image catches it with more atmosphere — the stone details sharp, the tower rising cleanly above them, the whole composition pulling the eye upward in the way the architect intended. Cleveland built something permanent here. I wanted the photograph to feel that way too.
