Monument Valley was the first National Monument to reopen after the Covid closure, and I was there on that first morning. There's a feeling you get when a sacred place has been quiet for a long time and then opens again — something between reverence and relief. The sunrise that greeted that first day seemed to understand the occasion, building slowly and then breaking in the full light that John Wayne and John Ford chased all over this valley for thirty years.
The mittens and the merrick butte are among the most recognizable landforms in the American West, and they photograph differently every single time depending on the light, the season, and the atmosphere. This morning the conditions aligned in a way that felt celebratory — the warm tones on the sandstone, the long shadows stretching across the valley floor, the sky doing exactly what it's supposed to do here. I'm sure somebody was smiling on the valley that day.
