Into the Light
Each piece is captured in a rare moment where light, time, and place come together.
I positioned myself at the entrance of this path in the middle of a soft spring morning and looked toward the far end, where the azaleas parted slightly and the warmth of the garden beyond was visible in a glow of gold and amber. The flowers on either side of the path were at full peak—pink and magenta and red in continuous bloom from the ground upward—and the branches above them had grown close enough to suggest a roof without quite forming one. Light entered from above in whatever way it could.
What made this composition distinct was the warmth at its center—the way the golden tones of the path's destination contrasted with the cool, vivid pink of the foreground flowers, creating a depth and a destination within the frame that pulled the eye through the tunnel of color toward something just out of reach. It is the kind of visual invitation that is difficult to resist, even in a photograph.
The azalea bloom is a brief thing. It arrives in a matter of days, reaches its full intensity for a week at most, and then begins to release—petals falling, color softening, the brilliant corridor reverting to green. I have made many photographs in this garden over many springs, and I have learned to treat every bloom as singular. The light was right on this morning. The color was at its height. The warmth at the end of the path was exactly where I wanted it. This is what the garden gave me, and I have not wasted it.
