Flying over the Low Country at first light, I watched the landscape reveal itself in ways impossible to see from the ground. The marsh islands emerged from the turquoise water like puzzle pieces scattered across a blue-green canvas, each one distinct yet part of a larger whole. From this vantage point, the intricate relationship between land and water became clear—not opposition, but constant conversation.
The clarity of the water surprised me. From above, I could see variations in depth and current, the way channels carved between islands, creating pathways that have existed for thousands of years. White egrets dotted some of the larger islands, tiny specks that reminded me of the scale of this ecosystem. I adjusted my altitude to capture the full scope while maintaining the detail that makes each island unique.
What draws me to aerial photography of the Low Country is this perspective shift. We know these marshes from boats and boardwalks, but from above, their true nature reveals itself—a living network of islands and waterways, constantly shaped by tide and time. The vibrant greens against turquoise water create a color palette that feels almost tropical, yet this is a temperate ecosystem, resilient and ever-changing.
