Island Beginnings 3

I climbed above the Lowcountry on a clear morning, and what I found below stopped me—not because I hadn't seen marshland before, but because from this altitude, everything I thought I knew about it rearranged itself completely. What appears from the ground as a tangle of spartina grass and winding creeks became, from the air, something closer to a map of the world: green islands suspended in water the color of Caribbean glass, their shapes organic and unhurried, their edges soft against the brilliant blue beneath them.

This is the Lowcountry as it actually exists—not the romanticized version seen from the shore, but the full, aerial truth of it. Miles of living marsh, tidal channels threading between islands of marsh grass, the whole system breathing with the rhythm of the tides. From above, you can see how alive it is. How deliberate. How extraordinary the scale of this ecosystem truly is when you give yourself the elevation to take it all in.

The color that morning was almost unbelievable—the water catching the full blue of a cloudless sky, the marsh grass green as anything in summer. I let the drone find the frame and waited for the light to settle. What came back was something between a painting and a map, between documentation and abstraction. It is the Lowcountry at its most essential: ancient, quietly spectacular, and entirely itself.
