I'd been on the water off Maui for two hours when the morning delivered this. A mother Pacific Humpback, teaching her newborn calf to breach in the sheltered channel — and when she went, she went completely, her entire massive frame clearing the surface and hanging in the air for one impossible second before crashing back down in a cascade of white water. The detail in the water coming off her is something I still look at in disbelief.
Humpback mothers and their calves are extraordinarily communicative, and what you witness in the water between them has an intelligence and intentionality to it that changes how you think about these animals. The breach of a fully grown humpback is a physical fact that doesn't shrink with repetition — every time I've seen it, it's still startling. The early morning light was hitting the water at an angle that made the spray luminous. I heard her, I think, before I fully registered what was happening. Look at me is exactly right.
