Not every night sky photograph requires perfect conditions — that's a lesson I keep having to relearn. I was at Sankaty Lighthouse on a night when the forecast said partly cloudy, which I normally wouldn't have chosen for a star shoot, but I was on Nantucket and the lighthouse was there and I was curious. Moving clouds over a lighthouse at night, it turns out, can produce something that a clear night never would.
The clouds in this image aren't obstacles — they're part of the composition, moving through the frame during the exposure and creating a streaked, layered quality that frames the lighthouse differently from the familiar static star shot. The stars that are visible hold their positions while the clouds move past them, and the overall effect is something between a weather photograph and an astronomical one. Look to the heavens, even on an average night. Average is relative.
