One in a Million

I'd driven out to Great Point Light specifically for sunset, making the long trek across the sand in a 4x4 because this lighthouse sits at the northern tip of Nantucket, accessible only by beach. The sky had been building all afternoon, and I knew if conditions held, the evening might deliver something exceptional.

When the light started to develop, I positioned myself to capture the full scene - the lighthouse and keeper's cottage sitting alone on the point, the marsh grass in the foreground catching golden light, and the sky overhead beginning its transition. What I was waiting for was that moment when everything aligns: dramatic clouds, warm color, and light that makes the landscape glow.

It happened exactly as I'd hoped. The sun dropped toward the horizon and the clouds caught fire—layers of grey, blue, coral, orange, and gold stacking overhead in formations that seemed almost designed for this moment. The starburst of the setting sun added energy without overwhelming the composition. The lighthouse stood patient and unmoved, doing what it's done for over a century, while the sky performed around it.

I worked quickly, knowing this light wouldn't last. The color was shifting by the minute, the intensity building and then beginning to fade. What I wanted to capture was the convergence - historic architecture, coastal landscape, and that rare quality of light that justifies the drive, the wait, and the patience required to be in position when it happens.
