The egret was at its nest site along the edge of a Lowcountry rookery when it spread its wings - not in preparation for flight, but in the full display that the species performs during courtship and territory assertion, the plume feathers cascading downward while the wings opened wide. It was calling at the same time, beak open, head thrown back slightly. The cedar trees of the rookery framed it from below, the morning light catching the white of the plumes and the vivid lime-green of the facial skin that only appears in breeding season. The whole posture communicated something between welcome and warning.
Great egrets in breeding season are among the most visually dramatic birds in the Lowcountry - the aigrette plumes that trail from the back and breast, the green facial skin that brightens around the eye, the intensity of a bird fully committed to making an impression. This one was making an impression. I was watching from a respectful distance with a long lens, and even from there the display was unmistakable.
Open Arms is about the moments when an animal is fully itself - not hiding, not resting, not in transit, but performing the exact behavior it was built to perform, in full. There is a quality of abandon in this bird's posture that is rare to photograph because it requires the right season, the right moment, and the patience to be in the right place when it arrives. At scale, the detail in the plumes and the expression of this bird is fully present. It earns its wall.
