Kentucky in October doesn't give you a lot of warning before the light becomes something extraordinary. I was out at a farm outside Lexington when the clouds started organizing in a way that told me something was about to happen. Within twenty minutes, the sky had built into a full display — purples and pinks stacked above deeper oranges near the horizon — while a single horse stood at the fence as if it had been waiting there for me all along.
I shot this vertically to give the sky the space it demanded. The white barn with its distinctive cupola rises against the clouds in the background, the red maples flanking it on both sides already at peak color. The horse in the foreground looks out from the frame with an expression somewhere between curiosity and complete disinterest — which, if you've spent any time around thoroughbreds, is exactly the look you expect. Sometimes the best subject in a landscape is the one that doesn't know it's in a photograph.
