The sockeye was still brilliant - that particular red-orange that wild Pacific salmon carry in late summer, a color so vivid it seems artificially intense until you're standing next to one and realize the river actually produces this. We had been walking the rivers and the grizzly mazes for two days at that point in the expedition, and the salmon run was at its peak. The bear carrying the fish was golden-coated, its fur warm in the afternoon light, its expression one of complete satisfaction. It was walking back toward the bank with the easy confidence of something that has done this many times and intends to do it many more.
Sockeye salmon in spawning colors against the amber fur of a grizzly bear: this is a color combination that could only come from nature, and only in Alaska, and only for a few weeks each year. The river was shallow and clear, the mountains were green behind it, and the light was doing exactly what Alaskan light does in August - warm, directional, generous with color.
Red and Gold is an image about abundance - about the moment in the year when the salmon run is full and the bears are at the height of their season, when the whole ecosystem arrives at its annual peak. I have never been to Alaska in August without feeling that I am witnessing something essential - something that has been happening in this place for longer than human memory and will, if we are careful, continue long after. This image holds that feeling. It is a piece for the wall of any room that deserves it.
