John Roebling designed this suspension bridge across the Ohio River between Cincinnati and Covington, Kentucky before he built the Brooklyn Bridge — and you can see the family resemblance. The south tower rises with the same stone authority, the same elegant proportions, and on an evening when the sky decides to perform, it becomes one of the more photographable structures in the midwest.
I was positioned on the Kentucky side of the river when this sunset developed, and I had maybe twenty minutes to work before the light was gone. The tower comes to life in this kind of sky — the stone catching the warm tones while the cables disappear into the distance. There's a permanence to the Roebling Bridge that feels right for a photograph. It's been connecting these two cities for over 150 years, and it shows no signs of stopping.
