Luna Park sits on the edge of Sydney Harbour, and on a clear night, the giant Ferris wheel becomes a neon signature visible from the water. I was shooting from across the harbour when the wheel was in full motion, its lights tracing circular paths through the frame at whatever shutter speed I chose — too fast and it freezes into a ring of dots, too slow and it becomes a full blur of color. I found the exposure that gave the wheel its sense of movement while keeping the harbour context readable behind it.
Sydney rewards night photography in ways that few harbor cities do — the combination of the bridge, the Opera House, the ferry wakes on the water, and Luna Park's spinning lights creates a scene that never quite looks the same twice. The wheel has been welcoming visitors into the park since 1935, which means it's been painting light across this harbour for nearly a century. Round and round, night after night.
