The alligator was moving across the pond at the particular pace that alligators use when they have somewhere to be and no reason to hurry - the tail sweeping slowly side to side, the body fully extended and just at the surface, the head angled slightly downward with the focused attention of an animal navigating by sense rather than sight. The water was the dark, tea-colored water of a Lowcountry pond in mid-morning, tinted by the tannins of the cypress roots beneath it and reflecting the green of the canopy above. The alligator's armored back caught the same color in a way that made the animal almost continuous with its environment.
Alligators are older than most things. They predate the Lowcountry by a considerable margin - the species essentially unchanged for millions of years, occupying the same freshwater and brackish habitats, doing the same things in the same ways, without the need for the kind of adaptation that other animals require when the world around them changes. The pond was theirs before it was ours. The stillness of this image reflects that.
Silent Crossing is a portrait of patience and permanence - of a species so thoroughly at home in its environment that even its movement looks like stillness. The green of the water and the armor of the back create a palette that is more beautiful than threatening, and the composition - the full length of the animal crossing the frame horizontally - gives the image its particular sense of deliberate, unhurried transit. On metal, the detail in the scales and the depth of the reflected green are fully present. This is the Lowcountry in its oldest register.
