Spring Thaw

There is a particular urgency to mountain water in spring, after the snowpack has released and every creek finds its voice again. I found this stream in the middle of a warm morning in May, the water moving fast and cold over the rocks below, the surrounding vegetation already deep green from weeks of moisture. A large tree arched overhead, its bark warm against the cool of the water below, and the whole scene was alive in a way that only moving water can animate a landscape.

I used a slow exposure to let the water find its form—not frozen mid-splash, but rendered as motion, as the continuous thing it actually is. The rocks emerge from the silkiness of the water like something solid and patient amid all that urgency. That contrast is what I was after: the permanence of stone against the pure insistence of spring runoff, moving through the frame with no intention of stopping for anything.

Spring Thaw is an image about release—the moment when the cold season finally gives way and everything that was held returns to motion. There is joy in it, but also a kind of wild confidence. The water knows exactly where it's going. It has waited long enough. Printed large, the detail in the water, the texture of the moss-covered rocks, and the green depth of the surrounding forest fill a space with the energy and freshness of a mountain spring that never really fades.
