Kings Island has operated its replica Eiffel Tower since 1972, and every Fourth of July, the fireworks show turns the park into something genuinely spectacular. I was positioned to frame the tower against the sky just as the display reached its peak — the aerial bursts competing with the lit tower for visual dominance, neither one conceding the frame.
Fireworks photography is a discipline of its own — the timing, the exposure length, the framing all have to be committed to in advance, because by the time you see what you want, it's already past. I wanted the tower as a fixed vertical anchor against the chaos of the bursts above and around it. The combination of the architectural reference and the explosive light is what gives this image its energy. The Big Bang captures a moment that happens once a year and lasts about sixty seconds.
