The sockeye salmon was still fighting when I made this image - you can see it in the tension of the fish, the way the bear's jaws were already adjusting for the grip. We had been walking the rivers for two days by this point in the expedition, working through the grizzly mazes and finding positions along the bank to watch the fishing. The bear charged through the river with the salmon clamped tight, water spraying in sheets from its fur and from the impact of each stride, the red-orange of the fish brilliant against the wet brown of the bear.
Catching a salmon in moving water is a skill that takes years to develop, and this bear had clearly developed it. The charge was direct and unhesitating, the catch clean. What followed was the purposeful crossing of the river to find a quiet place on the bank - the bear already moving past the moment of the catch toward the meal that came after it.
The Catch is one frame from a sequence that unfolded in a matter of seconds. What makes it hold is the color: that vivid red of the sockeye against the amber-gold of the bear's wet coat, the turquoise-green of the river behind them. Alaska in August, in full production, doing exactly what it has always done. On metal, the color in this image comes forward with a vibrancy that perfectly matches the intensity of the moment it contains.
