The Grove

Some mornings the garden gives you color. Some mornings it gives you atmosphere. On the morning I made this photograph, it gave me the oaks—massive and unhurried, their trunks wide and their Spanish moss hanging in long, dense curtains that moved in whatever breath of air the morning offered. The azaleas were present behind them, in brilliant reds and pinks, but they were background here. The trees were the subject, and the trees knew it.

I moved through the grove slowly, looking for the composition that gave the oaks the space they deserved while allowing the color behind them to register as context rather than distraction. What I found was a frame that let the trees dominate without crowding—the canopy above, the moss trailing in the middle distance, the azaleas visible through the gaps in the understory as a suggestion of what the season had brought to the garden's other rooms.

This is the Lowcountry live oak at its most itself: not framing a view or anchoring a path, but simply standing in the way that something that has lived this long stands—with a kind of settled authority that has nothing to prove. Spanish moss is the constant companion of these trees, and here it is everywhere, giving the grove a timelessness that the brief spring bloom behind it only deepens by contrast. Long after the azaleas have released their petals, the oaks remain exactly as they were. They always do.
