Cleveland calls itself The Land, and this photograph is why. I was positioned above the Cuyahoga River at night, using a slow shutter to let the water hold the reflection of the Terminal Tower — lit in red, white, and blue — in the slow current below. The skyline stretched across the background, the bridge lights traced lines across the frame, and the river did what rivers do best: carried the image of the city quietly downstream.
There's a particular pride in the way Cleveland identifies with its landscape and its river. The Cuyahoga is the city's spine, and the Terminal Tower is its crown, and this image tries to hold both of those things at once. The reflection isn't a copy of the tower — it's a different version of it, softened by the water, stretched by the current, belonging to the river the way the real tower belongs to the sky.
