The Nursery

The chick was still wearing its natal down - that soft, greenish-white fluff that young egrets carry in the early weeks before the adult plumage begins - when I photographed it in the nest below its parent. The rookery was deep in the Lowcountry, the cedar canopy thick above the nests, the constant sound of dozens of birds arriving and departing in the background. The adult bird stood over the chick in the branches, alert and watchful, its own long yellow bill held carefully away from the small form below. The green of the foliage surrounded them on all sides.

Great egret rookeries are busy, noisy, sometimes overwhelming places - dozens of nests in a confined space, adult birds coming and going constantly, chicks calling for food. But at the level of the individual nest, there is a quiet attentiveness between parent and offspring that this image captures in a still moment between the arrivals. The adult egret holds its position. The chick rests.

The Nursery is an image about the specific tenderness of early parenthood - about the posture that a parent takes when its offspring is new and small and requires that kind of particular attention. It is one of the most human-feeling images in this collection, not because the birds are behaving like people, but because the arrangement - the parent standing over the young one, watchful and close - reads across the species barrier with an immediacy that needs no translation.
