The Still Hunter

The bear was standing in the middle of the river when the light found it - that particular golden quality that arrives in the Alaskan afternoon and transforms every wet surface into something luminous. I had been working this stretch of river on foot for most of the day, holding a position in the vegetation on the bank, and this bear had been in the water for a long time before the light shifted into what I was waiting for. The bear itself was still, reading the water for the fish that moved beneath it.

This is a different kind of hunting than the charge and lunge. The still hunter stands and waits, watching the patterns of the current, tracking the shadows that salmon cast on the river bottom, waiting for the right position and the right moment before committing. It requires a patience that is easy to underestimate in an animal known for power. The river was full of fish. The bear had learned that stillness was the faster way to them.
