The bear had caught something in the shallows and risen upright to hold it - lifting whatever it had directly above its head with both forepaws, the way an animal does when it's not quite sure what it has and wants to get a good look at it. I was on the bank nearby, one of the days we spent walking the rivers on foot, and the scene played out directly in front of me with the complete unselfconsciousness that wild bears bring to everything they do. Standing there in the sunlight with its prize held aloft, water still dripping from its fur, it looked for all the world like an athlete who had just claimed something hard-won and wanted everyone to know it.
I watched this moment with a long lens and the awareness that what I was seeing was genuinely funny - not in any diminishing way, but in the way that wildlife can be funny when it behaves in ways that resonate with something recognizably human. The bear wasn't performing for me. It was just doing what bears do. But the posture was the posture of triumph, and the light was on it, and I pressed the shutter.
