The great egret came in low through the pines at the edge of a Lowcountry rookery, wings fully extended, its white form vivid against the soft greens of the maritime forest behind it. I had been tracking it for several minutes, waiting for the moment when its flight path and the available light would align, and this was that moment - the bird in the open gap between the trees, wings spread to their full span, every feather visible in the diffuse afternoon light that the Lowcountry produces in the hour before the day begins to cool.
Great egrets in flight are extraordinary subjects - their wingspan is enormous relative to their body weight, giving them a slow, powerful elegance in the air that makes them look like they're moving through a different medium than other birds. This one was angling toward a roost in the trees ahead, dropping in altitude with the practiced ease of an animal that has navigated this airspace hundreds of times.
Through the Trees is an image about grace in motion - about the particular beauty of a large, white bird threading its way through a green and dappled world. The contrast between the egret's white and the deep greens of the forest behind it is stark and simple, and at scale on metal the detail in the outstretched wings brings the bird fully forward off the wall, as though it has just now entered the room and is still deciding where to land.
